Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart
“Broken Music Vol. 2_Live” is pleased to present pioneering international artists Sven-Åke Johansson, Charlemagne Palestine, and Christian Marclay as well as emerging international artists Jessica Ekomane, Mieko Suzuki/Claudia Rohrmoser, Hassan Khan, and Emeka Ogboh, who now have a foothold in Berlin. Over the course of six evenings, the concert programme rounds off the current exhibition commemorating more than 70 years of records and sound works by artists at the Hamburger Bahnhof (through 14 May 2023). These live performances in the exhibition space defy the boundary between art and music. The close of the series will be celebrated with a Broken Music Party at the Rieckhallen on 5 May – marking the 40th anniversary of Freunde Guter Musik Berlin e. V.
Sven-Åke Johansson and Charlemagne Palestine have been creating sonically, physically, psycho-acoustically, and conceptually powerful, auratic music performances since the 1970s. The focus of Christian Marclay’s work – a trailblazer in the field of “turntablism” – as well as that of Mieko Suzuki and Raed Yassin has been on records, record players, and “playing with records.” While Jessica Ekomane, Hassan Kahn, and Emeka Ogboh have dedicated themselves to live montage and live electronic processing of previously recorded materials, samples, and field recordings. What unites all of their works is the refusal of any strict demarcation between aesthetic genres like music, visual art, and performance.
Freunde Guter Musik has collaborated with the Hamburger Bahnhof since its opening in 1996, partnering for the exhibition series “Works of Music by Visual Artists” begun in 1999 with projects by, among others, Hanne Darboven, Lawrence Wiener, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Ryoji Ikeda, Susan Philipsz, and Cevdet Erek. With “Broken Music Vol. 2_Live” Freunde Guter Musik celebrate their 40th anniversary of promoting and presenting experimental, intermedial, and open musical and sound art forms. Ursula Block – whose collection of artists' records, since acquired by Hamburger Bahnhof, serves as springboard for the current exhibition – was with her record gallery "gelbe MUSIK" a founding member of Freunde Guter Musik in 1983.
