2027 marks the 800th anniversary of the death of Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongolian empire. To mark the occasion, the Museum of Prehistory and Early History of the National Museums in Berlin is focusing on this central ruler figure in a major exhibition and shedding archaeological light on the world of the Mongols, which is virtually unknown in this country.

In the exhibition, high-ranking exhibits from half a millennium of nomadic equestrian life will be on display in an unprecedented variety. Archaeological treasures from Mongolia, many of which have never been shown in an exhibition outside Mongolia, are enriched by loans from Poland and Romania as well as from the Deutsches Historisches Museum, the Berlin State Library and the collections of the National Museums in Berlin.

They provide unique insights into the ‘Mongol Century’, which changed the world between 1250 and 1350. Of particular importance are the results of Mongolian-German research over the last two decades, which have revised and expanded our ideas about the Mongol Empire in many respects.
The opening of the exhibition in Berlin in October 2026 will take place in the presence of the Mongolian President as part of a state visit to Germany. 

The overall director is Matthias Wemhoff, Director of the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The curators of the exhibition are Jan Bemmann (University of Bonn) as well as Heino Neumayer, Anton Gass, and Benjamin Wehry (Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte).
