Neues Museum
Using his own specially developed painting and printing technique, the artist Gleb Bas has created pictures in which portraits of living contemporary subjects merge seamlessly with those depicted in Ancient Egyptian artworks. By doing this, the artist suggests entirely new ways of looking at and thinking about Ancient Egyptian art.
As one portrait metamorphoses into another, past and present are bridged. The statues seem to take on new guises when seen amidst the faces of the living, their features shifting and shimmering as though peering through a veil. With the pictures exhibited in close proximity to their ancient counterparts, spectators are able to compare the artworks directly and so further enrich their understanding of them. Indeed, the artist's ingenious technical innovations even seem to bring the museum's exhibits to life. The figures’ facial appearances are once again visible in near-perfect detail, bringing to light an expressive power which has in some instances been lost to wear or damage.
