As part of the performance series Zoom Out. Contemporary Perspectives on the Threshold of the Museum, contemporary artists Cem A., Jelena Fužinato, Valentina Utz, Manaf Halbouni and Christian Manss will explore the themes of borders, migration, identity and belonging. The performances will take place from 7 July 2024 in and around the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (Museum of European Cultures), the Kunstgewerbemuseum, the Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart and on Museumsinsel Berlin (Museum Island Berlin) and are free of charge.
The Zoom Out performance series invites contemporary artists to enter into a dialogue with the museums of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Based on the themes of borders and migration as well as identity and belonging, different perspectives on the museums will be adopted and questions raised about their significance and accessibility in today's society. The aim of this series is to guide visitors across the thresholds of museums, which take on a symbolic meaning, in order to both challenge these institutions and make them more accessible.
Zoom Out. Contemporary Perspectives on the Threshold of the Museum is conceived by Emily Finkelstein, Assistant Curator, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and Catalina Heroven, Research Associate, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, as part of the project “WEITWINKEL”.
WEITWINKEL – Global Perspectives on Collections is a project that has been running since 2019 and deals with transcultural topics and current issues based on exhibitions, research projects and collaborations at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The aim is to broaden the perspective in and on museums and to involve different societal groups using a variety of formats.
