Two Activity Days on Museumsinsel on March 22 2026

16.03.2026
Museumsinsel Berlin

The Museumsinsel Berlin will be celebrating in two ways on March 22: The Alte Nationalgalerie is marking its 150th anniversary with a special program, while Haus Bastian will host a day of activities featuring workshops, guided tours, and a sand animation show.

On Sunday, March 22, 2026, the Museumsinsel will host two days of activities featuring a diverse program for children, families, and adults. The Alte Nationalgalerie will host a celebration marking the museum’s 150th anniversary, as it was officially opened by Wilhelm I on March 22, 1876. At the same time, Haus Bastian will host a family activity day in German and Ukrainian.

Museum Anniversary with Opening and Program at the Alte Nationalgalerie

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Alte Nationalgalerie invites you to a birthday celebration featuring guided tours, insights into the collections, and more. The focus will also be on the building itself, the collection’s greatest work of art. The program includes, among other things, the passing of the torch from the Altes Museum to the Alte Nationalgalerie as part of the 200th anniversary of Museum Island (MI200), as well as the opening of the special exhibition “Scandal! Hermione von Preuschen and the Mors Imperator,” which explores the once-controversial painting “Mors Imperator” by artist Hermione von Preuschen. Numerous guided tours will take place throughout the day, including architectural tours of the Alte Nationalgalerie and themed tours. Family activities, surprise mini-tours, and insights into restoration work and curators’ favorite objects round out the program. Participation in the guided tours is free for adults with a valid admission ticket; children and teenagers have free admission.

German-Ukrainian Family Day at Haus Bastian

Also on March 22, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Haus Bastian will host a Family Day featuring many free activities. Workshops invite participants to get creative together: In the workshop “Gold Hat! Glitter Collar! Giant Glasses!” participants create imaginative accessories that they can then use to pose and take photos together (12–3 p.m., Level 0); in the workshop “Patterns! Printed!” postcards, crowns, and memory games are designed using printing techniques, guided by the Museum Club for Children and Youth from Ukraine (12–4 p.m., Level 1); in the workshop “Fabulous! Three-Dimensional!” participants will model imaginative creatures out of clay or playdough (12–4 p.m., Level 2). In addition, short guided tours titled “Off to the Museum!” will offer insights into the museums of Museum Island in German and Ukrainian every half hour between 1 and 4 p.m. At 4 p.m., the sand animation show “The Forest Song” will also take place, featuring music and a reading in German based on a play by Lesya Ukrainka.

Participation in all activities at Haus Bastian is free of charge, and no registration is required; the events are accessible to people with disabilities, and a picnic area is available for enjoying snacks and drinks you bring with you.
