Special Exhibition “The Worlds of Schliemann” to Be Extended until 8 January 2023

27.10.2022
Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte

Due to unwavering visitor demand, Berlin’s big Schliemann exhibition at the James-Simon-Galerie and the Neues Museum, The Worlds of Schliemann: His Life. His Discoveries. His Legacy, is being extended until 8 January 2023. The Greek loaning institutions – in particular the National Archaeological Museum in Athens – have agreed to the extension, allowing their spectacular loans to remain on display, including the gold objects from the tombs of Mycenae. This means that into the new year, visitors will be able to walk directly out of the rooms featuring the finds from Troy, dating back more than 4,000 years, and past the Lion Gate to the tombs of gold-rich Mycenae.

To mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, since 13 May 2022, the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin has been showcasing the colourful life of the boy from a village in Mecklenburg, cosmopolitan businessman and travel writer, and eventual archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in a large-scale special exhibition, from his shipwreck off the coast of Texel to the splendor of his Athens residence. Even the furniture from the study of this multilingual and indefatigable writer has travelled to Berlin especially for the exhibition.

More than 100,000 visitors have already travelled the world alongside Heinrich Schliemann, following his rise to become a successful businessman in St Petersburg, his adventurous activities in the Californian Gold Rush, and his journeys through China and Japan, before he discovered his vocation for archaeology in 1869. Along the way, visitors find themselves face to face with Heinrich Schliemann himself, masterfully embodied by actress Katharina Thalbach.

Heinrich Schliemann (1822–1890) found international renown as the discoverer of Troy. In just four years, Schliemann uncovered the Priam’s Treasure and the graves of Agamemnon and his companions – to this day two of archaeology’s most fascinating discoveries, which he managed in quick succession.

Drawing on recent research findings, this exhibition is the first of its kind to look at Schliemann’s adventurous life before he devoted himself to archaeology, in addition to showcasing his fascinating archaeological discoveries.

Tickets for the exhibition are available at the James-Simon-Galerie and from the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s online ticket shop, for €14, or €7 concession.
