Trans-cultural Relations, Global Biographies – Islamic Art?

Permanent exhibition
Pergamonmuseum

Selected artefacts currently on display in the Museum für Islamische Kunst at the Pergamonmuseum illustrate how various objects have migrated across different continents and how, on closer inspection, shared visual motifs, forms, and craft techniques reveal a network of references to other cultures, which one might not necessarily associate with 'Islamic art' today. The display thereby questions the notions of rigidly defined cultural boundaries that are often posited today.

The display has been developed by the 'Objects in Transfer' project, run by the Freie Universität's 'Episteme in Motion' centre, in cooperation with the Museum für Islamische Kunst.

Due to a technical issue, the lift is out of service until further notice, meaning the Museum für Islamische Kunst is not currently wheelchair accessible. The major architectural exhibits – such as the Processional Way, featuring the Ishtar Gate and the Market Gate of Miletus – are still accessible to people with mobility issues.
