A Collaboration between theMuseum für Islamische Kunst, the Vorderasiatisches Museum, the Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst as well as the Münzkabinett, the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Deutsches Historisches Museum.
Initiated by the Museum für Islamische Kunst (Museum for Islamic Art) in 2015, Multaka is a collaboration of the Museum für Islamische Kunst, the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East), the Bode-Museum and the Deutsches Historisches Museum. The Altes Museum, the Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie have been cooperation partners as well since 2024.
The project initially trained people with migration and/or refugee experience from Syria and Iraq as museum guides. Their task was to develop and lead Arabic language tours for others from their native regions who had recently arrived in Berlin. In 2021 the programme expanded to include people from Afghanistan and Iran, also to be trained as guides. In total, more than 30 guides were trained through Multaka Berlin, 16 of whom are still active within the project.
“Multaka” should be conceived of as an opportunity to foster the growth of new structures of understanding and acceptance in a heterogeneous and ethnically diverse society. The dialogue-based guided tours seek to facilitate the exchange of cultural and historical experiences and to build cultural bridges. Multaka (Arabic for “meeting place”) is committed to diversifying museum structures and encourages cultural participation among previously un- or under-addressed communities. It also strives to raise awareness of formerly marginalised perspectives and narratives in museum education and to implement them in a lasting way.
Every Sunday at 4 pm, tours in Arabic and Farsi are offered at the following four museums:
Meeting points are always the ticket office/info points at the museums.
Participation is free, no reservations required.
Please note: The Pergamonmuseum has been closed since October 2023 due to construction work. There are no guided tours in the exhibitions of the Museum für Islamische Kunst and the Vorderasiatisches Museum. Parts of the Pergamonmuseum reopen in spring 2027.
Special Tours in Arabic, Persian, English and German are bookable on request. Please register via info[at]multaka.de.
The Multaka World Heritage Tour transforms the Museumsinsel Berlin into a lively place of exchange and encounter for participants. Join us on a trip through the history of Museum Island and learn more about its historical origins. The interactive tour invites you to get to know the World Heritage site from different perspectives and to explore the significance of World Heritage for us today. Requests via info[at]multaka.de
The Multaka workshops provide a framework in which people meet and work with one another to exchange experiences and interact on a personal level. The objects in the museums serve as a starting point for reflecting on culture and history and offer workshop participants inspiration for creating their own art objects. For current workshop offers, please check the calendar.
The interactive “Shared Future” Toolbox provides games and exercises on the everyday topics of food, music and places. The toolbox aims to stimulate broader perspectives on the concept of migration and to promote a more comprehensive understanding of it. The free programme addresses adolescents and young adults (age 12+ / 7th grade) and is bookable for schools and youth clubs via info[at]multaka.de.
