Cultural X Collabs – Weaving The Future

A special presentation by the Museum for Islamic Art - Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

The Museum for Islamic Art is taking advantage of the Pergamonmuseum’s renovation closure for presenting a participatory project. The aim is to highlight ways of cultural exchange, both in the past and today, promote transregional participation, and make social connections tangible. The starting point of the project “Cultural X Collabs – Weaving The Future” is the 400-year-old Caucasian dragon carpet with its fateful history from the museum's collection.

A Doppelgänger of this carpet, hand-woven in India in 2022, reflects this history. During the vernissage, the Doppelgänger will be cut into 100 fragments and given to different people who will then pass them on. Until the museum reopens in 2027, these fragments will travel around the world through different owners. Their stories will be shared on social media and the online portal Islamic.Art. They will illustrate how cultural influences and people from all over the world shape the things we love, have loved in the past and will love in the future. The Museum for Islamic Art's online portal accompanies the project with background information and stories about each fragment.
