Get Away to the (Museum) Island! Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Summer Programme Begins on 30 June 2020

25.06.2020

From Tuesday, 30 June 2020, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin resumes its art appreciation and education work following a pause caused by the coronavirus pandemic. An extensive summer programme offering newly designed concepts and smaller events at several locations in Berlin shows how creatively the current conditions can be managed. There are numerous opportunities for families, young people and adults to explore the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Under the slogan Get Away to the (Museum) Island, visitors are invited to discover selected Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venues and collections during the summer holidays. Participants explore exciting art and cultural themes in outdoor settings with ample space. The focus is on Berlin’s Museumsinsel, where the Kolonnadenhof and Haus Bastian provide the sites for activities, discussions and guided tours. Similar offers are also available at the Kulturforum, Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin and the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK, Museum of European Cultures) at the Dahlem museum site. Beginning in July, the Kolonnaden Bar invites visitors to the Museumsinsel to evening lectures and refreshments. Events take place weekly unless noted otherwise.

“The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin brings together world-class art and cultural treasures, as well as the city’s most beautiful venues”, explained Director-General Michael Eissenhauer. “We are delighted to be able to make these locations accessible in a unique way during the summer break, especially to the Berlin public, for a vacation in our own city that can be just as stimulating as it is entertaining and full of surprises.”

“Special times require special vacation-time programmes”, says Heike Kropff, head of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Department of Education / Communication. “With our offer Get Away to the (Museum) Island, we are pleased to be able to resume our art appreciation and education work, which came to an abrupt halt on 14 March. We have missed the direct interaction with our visitors very much. In the meantime we have developed new concepts that fit the current situation and will continue to refine them over the summer to be able to react flexibly to new opportunities.”

“For four years now, we have been supporting the educational and outreach work of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin”, points out Thorsten Strauß, chairman of the Board of the Kuratorium Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Board of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation). “With Get Away to the (Museum) Island, we have succeeded in continuing the tradition of Connections and creatively adapting it to current challenges. We wish all families, young people and adults an exciting summer at the Berlin museums.”
