An exhibition by the Art Library's Photographic Collection, in conjunction with the Max Freiherr von Oppenheim Foundation, Cologne
Marking the Pergamonmuseum's major exhibition 'The Tell Halaf Adventure' (28 January to 14 August 2011), the Museum of Photography is presenting Max von Oppenheim's own unique personal photo collection that documents the time he spent in the Middle East between 1899 and 1939. The stash of photos managed to survive the Second World War in a dramatic set of circumstances. The photos themselves are infused with the fullness of Max von Oppenheim's own unmistakeable personality.
Although many different photographers worked under his charge over the years, in the selection and compilation of the pictures they took for him, Oppenheim's own view of his life's work and the world in general is clearly brought to the fore. The photographs' subjects range from the time he spent working for the German Foreign Office at the German consulate in Cairo to the archaeological finds at Tell Halaf and their unveiling to the public in his own museum in Berlin.
On show are also over 60 photo albums, containing a series of travel impressions, landscape and architectural photographs, ethnographic pictures of Bedouin, sheiks and diplomats, as well as photographs depicting typical events at work and the discoveries made at the digs in the Syrian desert.
