Transformations of Compassion
Buddha's Compassionate Helper

26.02.2009 to 30.08.2009

The deity Avalokiteshvara, the Lord who observes the world, occupies an eminent position in Buddhism. During the long process of development of this fascinating figure, who is seen as the embodiment of compassion, from ancient India to East Asia, a transformation took place in him from being a masculine god to becoming the feminine god Guanyin or Kannon.

The exhibition reveals the various facets in the deity's depiction in sculpture and painting from India, Central Asia, Tibet, South East Asia, China and Japan.
