The Landscapes of Sri Lanka - 100 Years Later. Drawings by Gabriele Heidecker

21.09.2014 to 08.02.2015
Museum für Asiatische Kunst

In the next installment of the exhibition 'Landscapes of Sri Lanka’ the Museum für Asiatische Kunst now presents drawings by Gabriele Heidecker. Her works were created as a visual journal documenting her impressions of a journey across Sri Lanka in winter 1978/79 - a hundred years after the first flowering of photography in what was then British Ceylon. In the 19th century tradition of the Ceylon tour, Gabriele Heidecker captured the majestic beauty of Sri Lanka’s landscapes.

Heidecker’s predominantly monochrome pencil drawings combine an attention to detail and textural structures with the vastness of the landscape framed by mountains and ocean. The drawings also capture the drama of the tropical sky and the power of the churning ocean. Along with sensitive portraits of locals and travellers are several plant portraits.
