The Floating World of the various pleasure districts in Japan's metropolises Edo (today's Tokyo), Osaka and Kyoto spawned a unique and highly developed consumer and entertainment culture, which found its most sublime expression in depictions of beautiful women and love-making. For the first time ever outside of Japan, the exhibition will present more than two-dozen scrolls paintings and just as many graphic prints on this topic from the Sumisho Collection in Tokyo.
hey range from several early and anonymous pieces and works by Hishikawa Moronobu, who is widely regarded as the pioneer of Floating World painting (Japanese: ukiyo-e) from the 17th century, through to various images of beauties crafted by the hands of such well known masters of the 18th century as Miyagawa Choshun and Kitagawa Utamaro and also go on to include samples of the best known figures of the ukiyo-e in the West, Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige.
