The foundation supports research on Indian culture in Germany. This support takes the form of financing selected monographs, awarding the Ernst Waldschmidt Prize, or providing grants for projects in the field of Indian studies.

Foundation Mission

The foundation’s mission is to promote research into Indian culture in Germany through exhibiting objects of Indian art and awarding grants, particularly for research carried out at the Museum für Asiatische Kunst at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Preussischer Kulturbesitz (previously the Museum für Indische Kunst). All research outcomes are published as quickly as possible, in accordance with § 2, para. 2 of the foundation’s constitution.

The foundation provides support for the following activities:

  1. awarding the Ernst Waldschmidt Prize,
  2. financing the publication of selected monographs on Indian archaeology, art and philology, and
  3. providing financial support to projects in Indian studies.

The decision to provide funding for projects in Indian studies was passed by the advisory board in December 2011. Applications should be directed to the chair of the advisory board, Prof Dr Ingo Strauch. The submission deadlines are listed under “Funding for Projects in Indian Studies”.
