La Sardegna
The View from inside and out

01.08.2008 to 28.09.2008

Museum Europäischer Kulturen
Museum Europäischer Kulturen

The exhibition will mark the start of the "Sardinian Month of Culture" and will present historical artefacts of everyday life from the Museum of European Cultures' own collection as well as historical recordings which were made at the end of the 19th century, originally commissioned by the Berliner Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte (BGAEU).

The ethnographic viewpoint of the 1930s is discernible in the works of the photojournalist and publicist, Bernd Lohse, whose bequeathment (parts of which will be on display here) is presided over by the Bildarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz. The view from the outside world will also be represented in the works of the photographer Herlinde Koelbl, who spent some time in Sardinia in the 1990s. Her photographs reflect both day-to-day occurrences and special events taken from the lives of the rural population.

A view that is wholly different in its approach is provided by the photographers Salvatore Ligios, Mario Arca, Massimo Mastrorillo and Luca Gabino. As Italians and Sardinians their focus is on the contemporary cultural and artistic aspects of life on the island. Their themes are the landscape and people, the people and art, which they convey to us in images distinctive and at times melancholic.
