Document Scotland
Reflections on a Changing Country

18.08.2022 to 20.11.2022
Museum Europäischer Kulturen

The special exhibition Document Scotland: Reflections on a Changing Country will take place within the framework of the 18th European Cultural Days in 2022. It is dedicated to the culture and heritage of the country, seen through the photographs of the “Document Scotland” collective.

In 2022, for its 18th European Cultural Days, the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK) presents the country of Scotland. The temporary exhibition offers a window onto the nation’s culture and heritage through photographs by the Document Scotland collective. Scottish-born photographers Sophie Gerrard, Stephen McLaren, Colin McPherson and Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert examine themes of belonging and history, and the diversity of community life across the country. Their contemporary photographs reveal both relatively unknown struggles and celebrated traditions. The work provokes questions about individual and collective identity that have become especially relevant today. Without taking a stance, the photographers respond to recent political changes and find out what connects the people, their land, work and ideologies.

18th European Cultural Days

The 18th European Cultural Days from 18 August to 18 September 2022 are concerned with Scottish traditions and current issues in Scotland. Through tours, film screenings, presentations, workshops, music, food and drinks, the exhibition reflects a nuanced image of the multi-faceted stateless nation that is Scotland.
