The Museum Europäischer Kulturen starts its Greek month

Over 450 guests celebrated the opening of the 15th European Cultural Days ‘Thessaloniki / Facets of a City’ on Thursday. For two weeks the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK) in Dahlem will focus on Greece’s second largest city. A photo exhibition and a packed events programme invites visitors to get acquainted with Thessaloniki in all of its complexity.

The programme is entirely oriented towards a metropolis that, like hardly any other, stands for European cultural history between East, West, and multiculuralism. Thessaloniki has always been a place where migrants have arrived and from which they have departed. Today it is a city of universities, trade fairs, culture, industry and ports – and remains a place where refugees land, fleeing Syria, for example. Up until World War II the city was also known as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans”, until German occupiers almost extinguished the Jewish inhabitants and their culture.

Photo exhibition

The photo exhibition Thessaloniki. Looking at time through moments: photographs 1900–2017 shows the social diversity of the city across its history. 50 chronologically arranged photographs invite visitors to travel through time and to retrace the development of the city. The images function both as documents of the past and as records of everyday moments, with the shots of the city drawing their vitality from the people they depict.

Events programme

The events programme develops the themes of the exhibition further, concentrating on both historical and current social, political and cultural affairs.

A project of the MEK and partners

The European Cultural Days 2018 ‘Thessaloniki / Facets of a City’ is a project of the MEK in cooperation with the Greek embassy in Germany, the Thessaloniki City Council, the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, the Heinrich Böll Stiftung in Thessaloniki, the Zentrum Modernes Griechenland at the Freie Universität Berlin, Hellas Filmbox, the association ‘Respekt für Griechenland e.V.’, the Greek communities in Berlin, the Association of Friends of the MEK and the restaurant eßkultur.
