Putting Down Roots: A Creative Plant Project accompanying the exhibition “Flight”

19.12.2025
Museum Europäischer Kulturen

As part of the exhibition Flight, the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK) is launching the participatory outreach project “Putting Down Roots”. In a series of creative workshops, people with and without experiences of displacement are invited to explore themes of arrival, belonging and new beginnings together.

Plants play a central role in the project as metaphors for growth and rootedness. Through sowing, repotting and caring for plants, conversations emerge about what people need in order to settle in a new place. Elements such as water, light and soil become symbols for community, security, time and care.

The workshops are led by Ukrainian artist Vasylysa Shchogoleva and German photographer Julia Marquardt. Using plants, photography and drawing, they create an open space for creative expression, personal stories and intergenerational exchange, reflecting the MEK’s participatory approach to cultural mediation.

The outcomes of the project will be presented at the Museum Europäischer Kulturen and will become part of the ongoing exhibition.
