A selection of 230 works provide a glimpse into the wealth of Germany’s largest collection of graphic arts via the online platform Google Arts & Culture. Through three online exhibitions, the Kupferstichkabinett allows visitors to take a closer look at particularly delicate and valuable collection highlights that are otherwise only on show in the context of special exhibitions.

Botticelli Featuring Dante offers close-ups of some of Botticelli’s outstanding illustrations of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Schinkel SUPERSTAR presents sketches by the Berlin architect and designer Karl Fredrich Schinkel, one of the most creative minds of the 19th century. The online exhibition Paper & Pixels: Out of Storage into the Database offers an exclusive glimpse behind the scenes of the Kupferstichkabinett, providing a vibrant demonstration of what it’s like to work in this world-famous institution.

There is also a newly produced high-resolution gigapixel reproduction of two impressions of Melencolia I, one of Albrecht Dürer’s three Meisterstiche (master prints). The zoom function allows details of the copperplate to become visible on the screen that would scarcely be recognizable when looking at the original with the naked eye.

The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin has been participating in the Google Art Project since 2011 (since 2016 called Google Arts & Culture), beginning with the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Gemäldegalerie. In 2012, the Kupferstichkabinett (initially with 59 works), the Pergamonmuseum and the Altes Museum joined in, followed in 2017 by the Museum Europäischer Kulturen and the Kunstgewerbemuseum.
