Making Things
Tomas Schmit: Performance as Drawing

15.09.2021 to 09.01.2022

When the European Fluxus group dissolved in 1964, Tomas Schmit (1943–2006), who had taken part in the activities of the group as a performer, gradually withdrew from the practice of performance. From 1966 he devoted himself primarily to writing and drawing.

But the idea of the stage as a place where action takes place before an audience had not disappeared from his art. The paper on which he drew became the setting for his artistic credo of “making things”. From then on, Schmit staged “the performance of drawing”.

While the Kupferstichkabinett will showcase the works on paper that Schmit created between 1966 and 2006, the parallel exhibition at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein will concentrate on his Fluxus activities.

A special exhibition presented by the Kupferstichkabinett – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in cooperation with the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) and the tomas schmit archiv, Berlin
