The Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is researching the drawings, prints and book projects of Lucas Cranach the Elder, his sons and the workshop in cooperation with the Kupferstich-Kabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. The aim is to digitally catalogue and research one of Cranach's largest collections in close collaboration with colleagues at the Kupferstich-Kabinett in Dresden and to develop a joint exhibition concept.
The intersidciplinary two-year reseach project is generously funded by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung and the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung. In 2024, the Getty Foundation granted a Travelling Workshop at which twelve early- and mid-career international curators and four mentors discussed the collections of prints, drawings and books in Berlin, Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Dresden as well as new approaches to research and presentation. The workshop provided significant impetus for our work and established a broad network on the topic.
The Research of Cranach's graphic works is part of the Cranach Digital Archive (CDA) of the Cologne Institute of Conservation Sciences at the TH Köln, the German Documentation Centre for Art History – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg at the Philipps-Universität Marburg and the Stiftung Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, which is funded by the DFG and Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung. The results of our research will be available on the websites of the SPK and SKD as well as of the CDA.
