Eighth European Day of Conservation-Restoration on 19 October 2025 at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Conservation-restoration workshops open their doors to the public: On 19 October 2025, the eighth European Day of Conservation-Restoration takes place. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and other institutions of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SPK, Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) are also offering numerous guided tours of workshops and exhibitions.

The SPK museums, libraries and archives preserve world cultural heritage dating from the dawn of human history to the present day. Responsibility for safeguarding these art and cultural assets lies in the hands of specialised conservator-restorers. They work primarily behind the scenes, ensuring suitable conditions for these holdings’ storage, transport, use and exhibition. Their activities also include researching materials and manufacturing techniques, as well as developing and implementing appropriate conservation and restoration methods.

Conservation-restoration is a key area of specialisation for the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz and an indispensable field of work and research. Museum institutions could hardly exist without it. With passion and expertise, conservation-restorers preserve the past for the future. It is wonderful that this day highlights their work with the recognition it deserves.

Marion Ackermann, president of the SPK

The restoration workshops of the Gemäldegalerie (Old Masters Paintings), Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings), Kunstbibliothek (Art Library), Hamburger Bahnhof and Humboldt Forum offer visitors a chance to take a behind-the-scenes look at museum works with experts. The Musikinstrumenten-Museum (Museum of Musical Instruments) and the Staatliche Museen are also offering guided tours of their workshops.
