ART FORM CLAY

07.06.2014 to 28.09.2014
Schloss Köpenick

Since 2009, the Kunstgewerbemuseum has hosted regular exhibitions of contemporary arts and crafts in its secondary location at Schloss Köpenick. The series continues this summer with a presentation of works by internationally renowned ceramists Judith Püschel, Antje Scharfe, and Karl Fulle. In addition to their educational background at the Hochschule für industrielle Formgestaltung, known today as the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle, the artists share a particularly imaginative and experimental approach to ceramic material, investigating the versatility of its surface and the boundaries between function, ornament, and representation.

Aside from an array of earlier work from the Kunstgewerbemuseum’s collection and several important loans from the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, a large number of recent works from private collections are also on display. Taken together, the works span a period of more than three decades, allowing the public to appreciate the decisive moments in each participating artist’s development. The exhibition offers a broad perspective on craftwork, featuring handcrafted vessels and representational sculptures, geometric objects and natural forms, a variety of firing techniques and multifaceted montages.

The exhibition’s location at Schloss Köpenick also creates a striking tension between the selected works and the examples of ceramic art that range from the Renaissance to the Rococo and which feature in the Kunstgewerbemuseum’s permanent collection.
