Ezio Manzini's lecture is based on more than ten years of experience in 48 DESIS Labs around the world. It presents design guidelines that clarify the scope for action in the city and promote the sustainability of projects. The first step is to work on a common vision of the city that will provide the basis for the participatory city scenario. These scenarios can focus on different areas such as "design for social cohesion", "design for community regeneration", "design for urban production" or "design for urban infrastructure".
Ezio Manzini is an Italian design academic and author known for his work on design for social innovation and sustainability. He is Professor of Design at the University Politecnico di Milano, Professor of Design at the University of the Arts London and currently Distinguished Professor of Design for Social Innovation at ELISAVA and Visiting Professor at Tongji University and Jiangnan University. Manzini is the founder of DESIS, the international network for Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability: desis-network.org.

The DESIS network has its roots in three international programmes in the period 2006-2008: the European research programme EMUDE, 2005; the UNEP programme CCSL, 2008 and the international conference "Changing the Change", as part of the Turin World Design Capital programme, 2008. Since September 2014, DESIS has been a non-profit and cultural association with the aim of promoting design for social innovation at universities with design discipline, in order to generate useful design knowledge and initiate meaningful social change in cooperation with other interest groups.
