This research project looking into Berlin clocks and watches is a collaboration between the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, the Stiftung Preussische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg, the SPK’s Musikinstrumentenmuseum and the Kunstgewerbemuseum. The production of clocks and watches in Berlin, which was one of the centres of this industry in the German-speaking world, has been the subject of scant investigation.
The collection ranges from pocket sundials to valuable table clocks, grandfather clocks and musical clocks, incredible achievements of mechanical engineering and the decorative arts. The objective of the project – which has been running since January 2020 – is to establish a publicly accessible information and research platform, as well as an online publication on the findings of this research into Clocks and Watches of Berlin Prior to 1918.
