Workshop, 11 and 12 May 2017: ‘Iconoclasm: Revering Paintings/Destroying Paintings’

11.04.2017
Kulturforum

To round off their international collaboration on the exhibition, Renaissance and Reformation: German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, and the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen are staging a workshop for Germany’s Luther centenary year to highlight the contemporary relevance of the exhibition.

The event will focus on the theme ‘Iconoclasm: Revering Paintings/Destroying Paintings’. A major phenomenon of the Reformation period, iconoclasm has acquired a new relevance in recent times. Why do pictures have the power to speak to us or impel us to destroy them? The workshop will explore our relationship with pictures and what lies behind the destruction of art – from the isolated, individually motivated act (like the acid attack on Dürer’s Mater Dolorosa) to politically and/or religiously motivated iconoclasm or ‘looking away’.
