Expansive Installation by Esther Stocker in the Central Staircase of the Kunstgewerbemuseum

The Vienna-based artist Esther Stocker has developed an expansive, site-specific installation for the central staircase hall of the Kunstgewerbemuseum. The work fits in with her works, which are always constructed according to conclusive parameters, with the basic themes of order and deviation, geometry and disturbance as well as their visualisation primarily in maximum contrast black and white, for which she has become internationally known.

With her intervention, she underlines the spatial qualities of the museum building designed by Rolf Gutbrod in the late 1960s. The installations by the Berlin architectural firm Kühn-Malvezzi from the 2014 renovation became the support for a horizontal system of order with deliberately placed breaks. The overall architectural context of the staircase can thus be experienced in a new way.

In Berlin, Esther Stocker works closely with the programme gallery drj art projects, which specialises in conceptual and minimal art and architecture.

The intervention was made possible by Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin, & Julius-Lessing-Gesellschaft, friends of the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
