An exhibition of the Kunstbibliothek in cooperation with the Sonderforschungsbereich "Erinnerungskulturen" at the University of Gießen.
Between 1798 and 1815, the Weimar publisher Friedrich Justin Bertuch published the journal "London and Paris". Due to a large number of French and English caricatures, this journal became an important medium of European cultural transfer. Foreign correspondents sent the original prints directly from London and Paris to Weimar, where they were artfully reproduced. The caricatures, published as coloured etchings with detailed annotations by the philologist Karl August Böttiger, ridiculed political players in England and France - above all Napoleon. The unrestrained character of these now widely available images revived the art of caricature as a tool of political debate in Germany and encouraged German artists to sharpen their pencils for the battle against the French Emperor. The exhibition is the first to present the original English and French caricatures, by artists such as Gillray and Rowlandson, alongside the reproduced images in "London and Paris". Additionally, it shows a number of German caricature publications inspired by these examples.
From 7 October to 3 December 2006, the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor shows the exhibition "Napoleon! Kunst und Karikatur um 1800" in the Max Liebermann Haus at Pariser Platz.
