The concept of the artist is often associated with ingenuity, creativity, and freedom of composition. This show understands the artist as an image constructed of certain conceptions and motifs, as a “complex”. Simultaneously, it is the photographic portrait that shows the span of the “artist complex”.
This show presents the manifold forms of portraits of artists in the twentieth century and displays around 180 photographs from the collection of the photographer Angelika Platen. The exhibition encompasses portraits of illustrious artists such as Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso taken by renowned photographers like Brassaï and Robert Doisneau.
The exhibition has received support from the Savings Banks Finance Group, main sponsor of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
