The exhibition presents various artists and the differing artistic approaches that they represent in how to conceive of the artist's book as an art form in its own right. The choice of artists reflects the formal diversity inherent in the artist's book and includes books that have the character of paintings, books on the art of drawing that are arranged like a chronicle, books that emphasize cuts or holes in the paper, and books that combine both text and pictures. The chosen artists refashion, rupture, and add to the book as a medium. For them, the book acts as a container for a carefully selected succession of sheets, with each one evolving from the other.
Intended as an alternative, self-contained place for art to thrive and as an additional space for its display, the artist's books were all created by famous artists who reside and work in North Rhine-Westphalia. The exhibition owes its distinctive character to the artist Nora Schattauer, who was responsible for the selection. Featured artists include: Lutz Fritsch, Paul Halloran, Katharina Hinsberg, Pia Niewöhner, Norbert Prangenberg, Michel Sauer, Nora Schattauer, and Suse Wiegand.
