The collector Egidio Marzona has in recent years donated to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin a considerable number of artworks, which are set to form a key element of the planned Museum of the 20th Century. In order to facilitate the research and development of the Marzona Archive, the SPK and SKD are linking up their respective resources.
Two years ago, Marzona donated 372 important works of Concept Art, Minimal Art, and Arte Povera to the Nationalgalerie and the Kupferstichkabinett. In 2002, Egidio Marzona endowed the Kunstbibliothek with a unique archive of art from the 1960s and 1970s. Visitors to the planned Museum of the 20th Century at the Kulturforum will be able to see these items, which span the whole range of media and historical periods represented in the Marzona Collection.
The collector has since decided to donate portions of the Marzona Archive still in his possession to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD). Berlin, meanwhile, is to benefit from the donation of a collection of books and archival documents for inclusion in the Marzona Collection, thus significantly complementing its holdings of artworks from the 1960s and 1970s.
The SPK's president, Hermann Parzinger, commented: “The outstanding Marzona Collection is to remain in Berlin and will form, as planned, an integral part of the future Museum of the 20th Century at the Kulturforum. Today's piece of good news for Dresden isn't bad news for Berlin. The Marzona Collection forms a universe so large that it warrants being researched and developed in two cities'. The SPK and SKD (who already share a long history of collaboration) have therefore agreed with Edigo Marzona to forge a closely integrated working partnership."
