As part of the German-Chinese Cultural Programme, marking this year’s 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the People’s Republic of China, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is presenting six special exhibitions on the overarching theme ‘China and Europe’.

The displays encompass a fascinating variety of topics, ranging from objects from the early high cultures of China via portrait painting from the Ming and Qing dynasties, through to the changing relationships between China and Europe, illustrated using the examples of the Summer Palace in Beijing, photography from the period of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, and contemporary Chinese graphic design.

Michael Eissenhauer, Director-General of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, said: ‘I am delighted that this anniversary provides us with an opportunity to use the exceptional objects from our collection not only to underline the ties between our institutions, but also as a way of strengthening our working relationship with international partners such as the Shanghai Museum, the Palace Museum in Beijing, and the Summer Palace’.
