Caspar David Friedrich: Infinite Landscapes at the Alte Nationalgalerie

A comprehensive exhibition showcasing the work of Caspar David Friedrich (1774—1840) is long overdue in Berlin. Not only is the Nationalgalerie home to one of the world’s largest collections of paintings by the artist, numerous acquisitions of his work and public presentations in the Prussian capital were also crucial to the development of his early renown. After the painter had faded into obscurity during the second half of the 19th century, in 1906, the Nationalgalerie paid tribute to the artist as never before by featuring 93 of his paintings and drawings in the legendary Deutsche Jahrhundertausstellung exhibition, in which Friedrich was celebrated as an outstanding painter of light and atmosphere, and a forerunner of modern art.

The rediscovery of Friedrich’s oeuvre, his pairs of paintings, and his working methods are all key focuses of the exhibition, which seeks to provide an overview of the painter’s life and work while also illustrating how his artworks combine precise studies of nature and romantic imagination. Friedrich created “landscapes of longing” that feature expansive skies and distant horizons, capturing the infinite nature of space and time. His timeless compositions remain so fascinating to us today because of the thoughts and feelings they inspire.

The exhibition is curated by Birgit Verwiebe, curator for painting at the Alte Nationalgalerie, and made possible by the Freunde der Nationalgalerie.

Caspar David Friedrich’s Anniversary Year

This presentation of works in Berlin is one of a series of thematically independent exhibitions taking place across 2024 at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen’s Albertinum and Kupferstich-Kabinett as part of Friedrich’s anniversary year celebrations, under the patronage of German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Caspar David Friedrich 2025 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of Friedrich’s birth, in 2025, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will host the first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the artist to be held in the United States (Caspar David Friedrich: The Soul of Nature, taking place from 7 February to 11 May 2025). The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the Alte Nationalgalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
