New museum complex will house the Nationalgalerie's important collections – ideas competition launched for architectural design and proposals for use of site
The Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz, the body that oversees the Nationalgalerie and all museums at the Staatliche Museen, has just launched one of its most important and ambitious new projects for the future. In the coming decade, Berlin's Kulturforum will become the site of the new 'Museum of the 20th Century'. Together with Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalerie, the new museum will come to hold the Nationalgalerie's collection of 20th century art, from the early 1900s up to the late 1990s. In a call for tender open to architectural practices around the world, the SPK is looking for the best architectural design for the building itself, as well as a concept proposal on how it can be embedded within the surrounding urban space.
