For more than 40 years, art collector Stefan Thull from Aachen has been interested in the role of the necktie in art and literature. He has now given his collection, The Necktie in Photography, to the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library), Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
Contact between Stefan Thull and the Kunstbibliothek has been ongoing for almost 40 years. The connection began when he first was able to view an original 1827 edition of L’Art de mettre sa cravat (The Art of Putting on Your Tie) at the Kunstbibliothek. Moritz Wullen, director of the Kunstbibliothek, and Britta Bommert, head of the Fashion Image Collection, are delighted with the “magnificent collection that shows the great verve and instinct for quality Stefan Thull has put into its careful development.”
The focus with which Thull views photographs is remarkable; he has been dealing with the necktie in the arts for over 40 years. It is against the background of this inclination – or passion – that his collection The Necktie in Photography fits perfectly into the Kunstbibliothek, with its fashion history collection, one of the largest of its kind worldwide.
Ninety-three necktie pictures from over one hundred years of fashion and photographic history are now archived in the Fashion Image Collection. They include portraits, reportage imagery, object photographs and conceptional or artistic works by photographers including Marianne Breslauer, Charles Wilp, Laure Albin Guillot, Louis Stettner, William Klein, Chema Madoz, Willy Maywald, Jeanloup Sieff, Herlinde Koelbl, Albert Watson and Daido Moriyama.
