Architecture for Art – The Current Plans for the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts

04.10.2018
Kulturforum

In the coming years the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts (Museum of the 20th Century) will be built at the Kulturforum according to plans by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. The Nationalgalerie’s art collections from the 20th century will be exhibited here and in the neighbouring Neue Nationalgalerie. The Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch Collection will be displayed in dialogue with the Nationalgalerie Collection. The Marx Collection as well as the Kunstbibliothek and the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin will have their own exhibition spaces.

The architects have been finalising the design with the future users since February 2018. This work includes planning the layouts of the future museum’s four floors. Three of these floors will be open to the public. They will offer space not only for various exhibitions, but also for art education, work with groups, visitor services, a multifunctional media room, and restaurant services. The internal areas of the museum will house storage, conservation, offices and technical facilities.

The first phase of the design work was completed in summer 2018. The project’s intermediate status will be presented and discussed at an informational event on 9 October 2018 at 7 pm.

Design planning is to be completed in summer 2019, after which the building permit will be secured. The awarding of construction contracts will be prepared during the subsequent implementation planning. At the beginning of the 21st century Berlin is finally on the way to creating an appropriate venue for the art of the 20th century.
