The exhibition takes a close look at two founding fathers of Dutch painting: the Master of Flémalle and Rogier van der Weyden. Around 1430, these two artists opened up completely new possibilities for the depiction of people and objects in art which would soon be enthusiastically taken up all over Europe.
The painters from the southern Netherlands laid the foundations for the painting of the modern era with their discovery of the individual in the portrait and the reproduction of convincing interiors and atmospheric landscapes. Just as during their own lifetimes, their art still continues to be admired for its brilliant rendering of light and shadow as well as for the deft reproduction of a diverse range of materials. Prominent donors from across the globe have offered their support to the ambitious exhibition project, which subsequently gathers many works from the Flémalle and Rogier van der Weyden group in one place like never before.
An exhibition by the Gemäldegalerie and the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, under the patronage of His Majesty Albert II, King of the Belgians, and Germany's Federal President, Horst Köhler, with support by Deutsche Bank.
