Despite the fact that in 1931 Frank Lloyd Wright had already complained that he forever suffered from bruises resulting from sitting on his own furniture, there is hardly an architect who can resist the temptation of designing his own chair. In this exhibition, the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Art) is showing around 45 chairs, most of them designed by architects such as Bruno Paul, Henry van de Velde, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto, Egon Eiermann, and Philippe Starck. Arranged chronologically, the show spans the entire 20th century and thus illustrates the central developments of design. "Sitting is Art" complements and expands upon the Kunstgewerbemuseum's design collection on permanent display which includes a large number of chairs and other seating furniture. The exhibition also offers the opportunity to make new discoveries among the treasures which are otherwise stored away.
