Oswald Mathias Ungers counts as one of the most influential architects in Germany since the end of the Second World War. Over half a century, his work has developed consistently and outside of all the fashionable movements of his time. Ungers' intellectual background is centred on the microcosmos of his eclectic collections of art, books and models. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, this significant architect is being honoured in the upper hall of Mies van der Rohe's New National Gallery of Berlin in the exhibition "O. M. Ungers. Kosmos der Architektur". In addition to a selection of his own projects, outstanding samples from his collections are being exhibited, in order to demonstrate the expansive cosmos of his approach. In cooperation with Ungers, the National Museums in Berlin are planning the reconstruction and extension of the Pergamon Museum on the Museum Island.
