Kupferstichkabinett
Several German museums have restituted five works of art from the collection of the Chemnitz banker Carl Heumann. During a provenance research project, experts also identified two graphic works from the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Kupferstichkabinett as belonging to the Carl Heumann collection: Johann Jakob Schillinger’s Devil’s Bridge and Friedrich Jentzen’s Portrait of the Master Builder August Stüler. The former has been restituted, while the latter will remain in the collection.
On 4 July 2022, a total of five works of art from several German museums were handed over to the heirs of the Chemnitz banker Carl Heumann at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus. The Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (SPK), the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus restituted the works as part of their efforts to seek just and fair solutions (as outlined by the 1998 Washington Principles) in response to Carl Heumann’s persecution. Michael Heumann, who lives in the USA, accepted the works as the representative of the heirs. The SPK agreed with Carl Heumann’s heirs that Devil’s Bridge would be restituted, while Jentzen’s portrait of Stüler would remain in the collection.
