Gemäldegalerie
A new, specially designed lighting system is being installed in the Gemäldegalerie by autumn 2023. This renovation contributes to the conservation and protection of the collection, reduces the gallery‘s carbon footprint, and improves the aesthetic display of artworks. Reduced overhead lighting, harmonious ambient lighting, and precisely placed light accents on individual works are optimising the presentation of the collection.
The first partial closure began in October 2021. After the successful completion of the works in three areas, our visitors can now experience the 17th-century Flemish and Dutch paintings, the 17th and 18th-century English, French, Italian, and Spanish paintings, and the German and early Netherlandish painting from the 13th to 16th century in a new light.
The work required during the last installation phase is expected to be completed by September 2023. During this period, a quarter of the collection display area will be temporarily closed.
The last installation section includes the galleries of Italian Painting from the 13th to 16th centuries (Halls XV-XVIII, Galleries 29-41). These areas will not be accessible from 13 March until approximately 16 September 2023 (Floor plan, PDF 130 KB).
We ask for your patience and understanding during this temporary period of necessary closures.
A selection of major works from the area closed during the fourth installation phase will be on display in Galleries 25–26, as will be selected dialogues of early Netherlandish and German painting in Halls I, III, and V, and further Italian paintings (Overview of the exhibited works, PDF, 641 KB).
The modernisation of the lighting system has been made possible through the generous financial support of Adolf Würth GmbH & Co.KG.
