Design Lab #6 at the Kunstgewerbemuseum – Now Online!

Kunstgewerbemuseum

Design Lab #6 was originally planned as an open-air design festival in the courtyard of the Kunstgewerbemuseum. The Experimental Design Studio at the Hamburg School of Fine Arts was looking forward to three weeks of projects, discussion and collective collaboration when COVID-19 thwarted the project. However, the Hamburg studio has quickly moved the project online. The result: a three-week online research festival on the topic "(How) do we (want to) work (together) (as (socially engaged) designers (students and neighbours)) (in neoliberal times)?"

From 24 June to 10 July 2020, interested parties are invited to participate in the public research process three days a week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), and to help shape the project. The website www.howtowork.live, specially designed for the project, serves as a platform. From there, visitors can take part in digital workshops, discussions and lectures.

The days are divided into the following event formats:

  • 10:00 am Design Debate
Curated reading groups with open discussion.
  • 5:00 pm Collaborate
Hands-on spaces for workshops, presentations and conversations with invited guests.
  • 8:00 pm Evening Talk
Thematic lectures with commentary and discussion.
  • Varying Open Space
Virtual space for informal pastimes, performances and film.

Each week is dedicated to a specific main theme:

  • Week 1: Creative work and exhaustion
  • Week 2: Care work and precarity
  • Week 3: Collaborative work and exploitation

The festival line-up is constantly updated on the project website. If you would like to take a look behind the scenes of Design Lab #6, you can follow the working process on the project-based Instagram channel @howtowork.festival.
