Visitor Services

Covering some 10,900 square metres and designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the building provides visitors not just the central service functions of an information desk, a group ticket desk and general ticket sales, but also individual and group cloakrooms, along with a café/restaurant, the largest museum shop in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin network, an auditorium and a special exhibition space.

Entry to the Neues Museum and the Pergamonmuseum

As of 13 July 2019 and until the completion of phase A of the restoration and refurbishment of the Pergamonmuseum, the James-Simon-Galerie constitutes the sole entry to the Pergamonmuseum (via the stairs and the upper foyer). All groups visiting the Neues Museum are to enter the James-Simon-Galerie via the courtyard and the lower foyer.

Admission to the James-Simon-Galerie is free of charge, with the exception of the special exhibitions in the special exhibition space. All tickets to the Neues Museum and the Pergamonmuseum also include entry to the special exhibition.

Permanent Exhibition

The lower floor of the James-Simon-Galerie hosts a permanent exhibition with a tactile model of the Museumsinsel Berlin, a reproduction of a cabinet from the cabinet of antiquities in the Berlin Palace, and a drawer with original coins that were among the first purchases of the Royal Kunstkammer, as well as one of the foundation pillars of the building that preceded the James-Simon-Galerie (constructed between 1829 and 1832). Three media installations take a diverse and interactive look at the history of the Museumsinsel Berlin, the museum buildings and their collections.

The building and the exhibitions are accessible for people with mobility issues. Wheelchairs and foldable stools can be borrowed from the cloakroom. The building also has a wheelchair-accessible bathroom.
