The objective of this project is to showcase Europe’s rich archaeological heritage on the Europeana portal: including archaeological monuments, historic buildings, cultural landscapes, and artefacts. The aim is not only to increase the volume of high-quality digital content on Europeana, but also to make the content reusable for users.
During the course of the project, the individual partners will add a large number of new datasets to the web portal Europeana and increase the quality of the collections already available on the platform. The latter will be achieved by providing high-resolution images or 3D data, and by enriching the metadata on the individual objects. The project also seeks to map vocabularies with reference to the Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) and expand the use of multilingual Linked Open Data and geo-data. Together with its partner Athena R.C., the Institut für Museumsforschung (as the representative of the project partner SPK) is developing a vocabulary-mapping tool that enables the enrichment of metadata with Linked Open Data in the Europeana data format EDM. This tool will be available for continued use after the conclusion of the project.
The content provided by the project will be directly available to Europeana users via the thematic collection “Archaeology”.
The project will conclude with an international conference on “Connecting Archaeology in Europe: Europeana as a Unifying Element”, which will take place virtually on 8–9 October 2020 and will be organised by the IfM on behalf of the SPK.
