To provide a framework for critical reflection on Sri Lanka’s history since independence and the conclusion of its long-running civil war, the Strengthening Reconciliation Processes in Sri Lanka (SRP) project has developed a travelling history museum, which has gone on display at various locations around Sri Lanka. The SRP project is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and the European Union and implemented by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in collaboration with the British Council. The aim of the current project partnership between the GIZ/SRP and the IfM is to transport the travelling history museum to the virtual realm.

With the guidance and coordination of the IfM, the travelling history museum will be transformed into a virtual space that allows for the four thematic areas of the exhibition to be experienced virtually. This involves both a reworking of the exhibition elements for the digital presentation, as well as a comprehensive reworking of their educational and conceptual content. At the same time, the views of stakeholders and future audiences will be integrated into the design and prototyping process facilitated by the IfM. From the IfM’s perspective, this project will also help to further develop the theoretical approach to the virtual museum and its potential to redefine the “museum experience” in a global and local context.
