The Institut für Museumsforschung works closely with the Deutscher Museumsbund (German Museums Association). It collaborates with the Deutscher Museumsbund in jointly publishing the results of the annual statistical survey of all German museums and also answers, on its behalf, technical questions posed to the Deutscher Museumsbund by both domestic and foreign museums and associations.
The Institut für Museumsforschung does not release or make political statements or comments relating to museum policy. That domain is reserved for the management level of the Deutscher Museumsbund. Furthermore, the Institut für Museumsforschung largely excludes making judgements concerning museum policy in its documentation and reports on visitor research and cultural statistics. As a result, a clear distinction is maintained between, on the one hand, the work of the Deutscher Museumsbund at an internal and management level and that of the IfM on the other. Institute staff concentrate on conducting factual research, documentation, and communication work.
In this respect, the Berlin-based Institut für Museumsforschung sees itself as the partner to both the German federal government and state governments, as well as to various representatives from cities and municipalities in matters of museum planning, documentation, and museum statistics. The IfM also acts as a partner to regional museum associations within Germany, to specialist advice bureaus, and to museum departments at local-government level, by assisting them in matters relating to museum research, documentation, and mediation.
