Profile

With the Humboldt Forum housed in the new Berlin Palace, a unique centre for art, culture, research and education is being built in the centre of Berlin. The Forum focuses on intercultural dialogue, and provides a range of perspectives on globally significant issues, both historical and contemporary.

From late 2019, the Humboldt Forum will host permanent exhibitions from a range of partner institutions, including the collection display of the Ethnologisches Museum and of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Preussischer Kulturbesitz), the Berlin Exhibition (Kulturprojekte Berlin and Stadtmuseum Berlin), as well as the Humboldt Labor (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin). With rotating special exhibitions, these partners will work together in the Humboldt Forum along with a number of additional institutions. The Humboldt Forum is overseen by the Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss.

For the Ethnologisches Museum and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst, this move represents a return to their original home. Their formation – and that of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin more generally – is closely connected with the history of the palace, in particular with the Kunstkammer, the original “nucleus” from which the SMB grew. Together with their sister collections on the Museumsinsel, they will provide an overview of global art and culture that traverses epochs and continents.
