Monica Bonvicini's multifaceted practice encompasses sculpture, installation, drawing and video. Her works examine the relationships between architecture, space and control. In doing so, she reflects on both the conditions of artistic production as well as existing power structures and gender dynamics. Often responding directly to the exhibition site, her practice actively engages viewers as participants within the space.
Since 2017, Bonvicini has been Professor of Sculpture at the Universität der Künste Berlin. Her works are part of the collection of the National Gallery. In 2005, she held a solo exhibition entitled NEVER AGAIN at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, which was awarded the Preis der Nationalgalerie.
Bonvicini’s work has been exhibited internationally. Major solo exhibitions have been presented at Kunst Museum Winterthur, Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin (both 2022), Belvedere 21, Vienna (2019), Berlinische Galerie (2017), The Art Institute of Chicago (2009), and Palais de Tokyo (2002). She has also participated in numerous international biennials, including the Biennale di Venezia, where she received the Golden Lion for Sculpture in 1999.
In the series “In Conversation. A series funded by Deutsche Bank”, an artist talks about their work on the first Saturday of every month at 3 p.m.
