National Gallery Prize for Young Art 2011
Cyprien Gaillard, Kitty Kraus, Klara Lidén und Andro Wekua

09.09.2011 to 08.01.2012
Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart

This year will already be the sixth time the Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst has been awarded. With prize money totalling 50,000 euros, it is one of the highest prizes for contemporary art in Germany.

By singling out Cyprien Gaillard, Kitty Kraus, Klara Lidén and Andro Wekua, the prize honours four young artists who have entered the public discourse with self-assured artistic works. What they share is a great openness, a nearly anarchic delight in experimentation that simultaneously operates on a sensual level. Cyprien Gaillard takes social and urban themes as the basis for his videos that navigate around the myths surrounding the various places they feature and point to the disintegration or destructive excesses of contemporary life. Composed with an eye to dramaturgy, Kitty Kraus's installations render moments of fragility and dissolution tangible and provoke questions on our own existence and its finality. Klara Lidén, by comparison, primarily presents viewers with simple stories, but ones that are emotionally and metaphorically charged, with the result that the other creeps into her work, both in a physical and mental sense. Through his pictures - be they works on paper, film or spatial arrangements - ANDRO WEKUA pieces together an apparently clear vision of the world, but one which wholly eludes us. Accordingly, the works remain fictive and puzzling, referring to the past as well as the future.

Visitors are able to cast their votes for one of the four nominated artists during the course of the exhibition. The winner selected by the jury will be announced on 28 September. For the first time ever, the Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Filmkunst will also be awarded in conjunction with the event, as part of a collaborative partnership with the Deutsche Filmakademie. The aim of this particular prize is to strengthen the bonds between the genres of artists' films and film art. The prizewinner's film will be shown from 29.9.2011 to 8.1.2012.
